Anambra begins free fibroid surgeries under Soludo healthcare initiative

Anambra State Government has commenced free fibroid surgeries for women across the state under a healthcare outreach organised by the Friends of Soludo to mark the birthdays of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, Dr Nonye Soludo.
The initiative, which began at Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital in Njikoka Local Government Area, is part of a broader medical outreach providing free screenings, treatments and surgeries aimed at reducing the financial burden of healthcare for residents.
The programme includes free myomectomy for women with fibroids and ovarian cysts, as well as other surgical interventions at designated hospitals across the state.
Speaking during the commencement of the exercise on Monday, the Chief Medical Officer of Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital, Dr Dozie Udeolisa, described the initiative as a life-changing intervention for women who had been unable to afford the cost of surgery.
He said, “Fibroid surgery is often beyond the financial reach of many families, causing patients to live with pain and complications for years. The free surgery programme initiated by ‘Friends of the Governor’ is removing that barrier by providing treatment at no cost.
“Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital is one of the designated centres for the exercise, where women who successfully completed the registration and screening process are now undergoing surgery freely.
“Screening began before the commencement of operations, while a team of experienced surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and other healthcare professionals has been mobilised to ensure safe and successful procedures.”
Udeolisa explained that the duration of each operation depends on the patient’s medical condition, noting that every case is different.
He said the turnout of beneficiaries had been encouraging, with many women who previously postponed treatment because of financial constraints now receiving the care they needed free of charge.
The medical officer expressed appreciation to Soludo and the Friends of the Governor for supporting the programme, describing it as a practical demonstration of compassion and commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Anambra State.
According to him, the outreach also includes free cataract surgeries, glaucoma screening and treatment at the Anambra State Specialist Eye Centre in Nise, as well as free hernia surgeries at General Hospital, Umueri.
He urged eligible residents to take advantage of the ongoing programme, assuring them that all surgeries are completely free and that beneficiaries would receive quality medical care throughout the exercise.
The healthcare outreach is one of several initiatives introduced by the Soludo administration to improve access to affordable healthcare services and reduce preventable illnesses across communities in Anambra State.
