Tension has erupted at the Port Harcourt Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, as the association prepares to conduct its branch election today.
The development follows allegations by some lawyers that the Electoral Committee failed to comply with the branch’s bye-laws by not publishing the voters’ register ahead of the election.
Lawyers who gathered at the NBA House in Port Harcourt were seen chanting in opposing camps, with one group backing the conduct of the election while another demanded its suspension over the alleged irregularities.
Security has been tightened at the venue, with personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, DSS, deployed to maintain law and order.
