52 Sokoto youths secure BUA cement skills dev’t jobs

No fewer than 52 youths from host communities in Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State have secured automatic employment with BUA Cement Plc after successfully completing a six-month training programme on heavy-duty equipment operations.
The initiative, which trained 60 unemployed youths, was fully sponsored by the company as part of its corporate social responsibility aimed at equipping young people with employable skills and reducing unemployment.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, described the programme as a significant investment in the future of the state’s youths.
Represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Trade and Industry, Alhaji Haruna Abbas Bashir, the governor said the occasion was “a celebration of empowerment, opportunity and hope” rather than just the presentation of certificates.
“Skills acquisition remains one of the most effective tools for addressing unemployment, reducing poverty and promoting inclusive economic growth. It enables individuals not only to earn a living but also to become innovators, entrepreneurs and employers of labour,” he said.
Aliyu commended BUA Cement for partnering with the government in developing human capital, noting that private sector investments in vocational training were critical to sustainable economic growth.
“Programmes such as this demonstrate the positive impact that can be achieved when corporate organisations invest in their host communities and the nation’s workforce,” the governor added.
He urged the graduates to put their newly acquired skills to good use, stressing that the certificates they received symbolised hard work, discipline and practical competence.
“The real task begins now. Continue learning, maintain the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, and use your skills to create opportunities within your communities,” he advised.
Aliyu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for businesses while supporting initiatives that promote entrepreneurship, vocational education and sustainable livelihoods.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of BUA Cement, Engr. Yusuf Binji, represented by the Assistant Director, Administration and Corporate Services, Alhaji Sada Suleiman, said the programme underscored the company’s determination to tackle youth unemployment through practical skills training.
“This initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to reducing unemployment and strengthening our relationship with the Sokoto State Government and our host communities. We will continue to invest in projects that improve the lives of our people,” he said.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Wamakko Local Government, Alhaji Umaru Muhammad Dundaye, applauded BUA Cement for its consistent interventions in health, agriculture, water supply and safety education.
The District Head of Sabon Garin Gedawa, Alhaji Shehu Dan Galadima, who represented traditional rulers, also praised the company for complementing government’s efforts to improve the welfare of residents.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to BUA Cement for the opportunity, describing the employment as life-changing, and pledged to remain hardworking, disciplined and committed in the discharge of their duties.
