Activist lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, has said the decision of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to institute legal action against President Bola Tinubu over certificate discrepancies is an “action that is dead on arrival.”

Idam explained that the judicial system lacks the courage to allow justice to be done in such a matter.

Atiku had instituted legal action against Tinubu over the discrepancy in names on the president’s form submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The former vice president had urged the court to disqualify Tinubu from participating in the 2027 election.

However, in a statement he signed, the activist lawyer said the legal action would continue to expose the weakness of the judicial system in Nigeria.

He said: “That is the sentiment of most Tinubu supporters, and regrettably, that may well be the reality confronting the suit, not necessarily because the action lacks merit, but because the system, as presently constituted, appears to lack the courage to allow justice to be done in the matter.

“However, whether the action succeeds or fails, it will continue to expose the weaknesses of our institutions, lampoon the system, and subject it to public scorn and ridicule.

“The greatest danger to democracy is not merely bad laws; it is a system in which citizens lose faith that the law will be applied impartially.

“With the way things are going, I seriously doubt whether Nigeria can sustain a system worthy of human existence beyond 2031 if we fail to undertake fundamental institutional reforms.”
