The 2026/27 Premier League season is almost upon us, with the 20 best teams in the country making their final preparations ahead of the season beginning on 21 August.
And while the destination of the top flight title will be the main focus as always, there promises to be an intriguing battle at the bottom of the table too as several sides look to stave off relegation come May.
The Premier League relegation battle is often one of the most compelling storylines as the season rumbles on, and with plenty of chopping and changing it promises to be fascinating once again in 2026/27.
As is often the case ahead of the season starting, football bookmakers currently have the three promoted sides – Hull City, Coventry City and Ipswich Town – as favourites to go down in their latest Premier League odds.
However, teams who struggled last season could do so again this term, with the likes of Leeds United and Nottingham Forest also seen to be in the relegation dogfight early on.
And, as shown by Tottenham last season, you never quite know who might be dragged into a battle for survival in the Premier League, with Newcastle among those priced surprisingly low on betting sites ahead of the new season kicking off.

The start of every Premier League season brings with it doubts over the ability of each of the promoted sides to survive in the top flight, so it’s no surprise to see Coventry, Ipswich and Hull as the early favourites to go down.
Individually, Coventry and Ipswich are both priced around 4/6 to be relegated, with Hull City found as low as 1/4 on some betting sites.
Of course, as we saw last season with Sunderland and Leeds, the bookies are not always right, and less-fancied sides can survive – and even climb into Europe in the case of the Black Cats in 2025/26.
Nevertheless, the fact remains that all three promoted teams were relegated in the two seasons before 2025/26, and with only Ipswich carrying any recent Premier League experience – and even that being just one season – it feels like we could see this trio go straight back down come May.
The bookies clearly think Hull are a given to go down, with Sergej Jakirovic’s side possessing the least experience as well as probably the weakest squad at the time of writing. Paddy McNair, Jack Butland and Matt Targett are some of the only players with top-flight experience, and huge movement in the transfer market will be needed to keep the Tigers up.
As for Ipswich, the departure of Kieran McKenna will surely affect the squad, though there is more Premier League experience within it, and the signings of players such as Issa Diop, Florentino Luis and Abdul Fatawu provides some promise.
Finally, Coventry come into the new season off the back of a superb 25/26 in the Championship, and though they might be the best of the three promoted sides on paper, it os difficult to tell whether they’ll have enough quality in the squad to stay up.
However, with Hull looking likely to go down and several Premier League sides potentially struggling as they did last season, we think one of Ipswich or Coventry will manage to stay up.

As mentioned above, betting sites seem to believe relegation is almost certain for Hull City next season, with a mix of inexperience and squad quality likely to cost the Tigers in the long run.
Only a handful of players in the current squad have any top-flight experience at all, with Jack Butland and Matt Targett among them. While there is still time to make signings, there would likely need to be huge spending in the next month to get this squad to the required level (on paper anyway).
Manager Sergej Jakirovic has never led a team at this level, and while he did extremely well to get the Tigers promoted in the end, the fact that this side finished sixth last season – seven points behind Middlesbrough in fifth, 11 points behind Ipswich and 22 behind Coventry – has clearly had some bearing on their current odds too.
In any case, it certainly looks like it’ll be extremely difficult for the Tigers to stay in the league next term. Though some said the same of Sunderland last season, their net spend of £135m is at odds with Hull’s current spend of around £20m, and that will likely prove crucial come May.

Though Ipswich and Coventry are regarded as the other teams likely to go down, last season showed that some surprise teams can enter the race for survival as the season goes on.
Tottenham and West Ham were among them last term, with the Hammers the unlucky ones as they returned to the second division. As it stands, teams including Nottingham Forest, Brentford, Fulham and Leeds are seen as likely to have some sort of relegation scrap on their hands in 2026/27, with odds around 8/1 and 11/2 respectively.
One interesting option could be Sunderland, with the Black Cats offered around 3/1 to go down and could be an option to use with a free bet offer rather than straight cash bet.
Regis Le Bris’ side surprised everyone when they finished seventh last year and secured European football, though a £100m summer window certainly helped, and the Wearside club won’t be resting on their laurels this season either.
However, while Thomas Meunier has arrived, there has been a lack of movement elsewhere in the market, and there will be a worry as to whether the squad is equipped to deal with both European and domestic campaigns.
As seen with Nottingham Forest and Spurs last term, the demands of European football can derail a season, and there is a question over whether the Black Cats will be able to deal with the increased workload and pressure.
