Rail passengers are facing major disruption heading to Birmingham International Airport with delays and cancellations after a train derailed.

The freight train came off the tracks at low speed near Bilbrook, Wolverhampton, West Midlands Railway (WMR) said. It damaged overheard wires and is affecting multiple routes.

Disruption is expected to continue all day with trains between Wolverhampton, Stafford and Shrewsbury currently unable to run in both directions.

Trains heading through the Midlands are affected by disruption which is expected to last throughout the day.

All lines between Wolverhampton and Stafford/Shrewsbury are disrupted.

National Rail says: “As a result of this incident, trains running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised. Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.”

Rail passengers heading to Birmingham Airport are affected by the derailment.

National Rail states: “Trains are unable to run between Birmingham International and Shrewsbury in either direction.

“Rail replacement transport is in operation between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury (operated by Keans, Pats, JKT and Northwich). Road transport will take longer than rail services. Please allow extra time to complete your journey.”

Your ticket can be used on the following at no extra cost:

  • Alternative Transport for Wales services between Shrewsbury and Crewe
  • London Northwestern Railway between Birmingham New Street and Crewe
  • CrossCountry between Birmingham New Street and Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham New Street

If you decide to travel from a different station due to this disruption and need to return to that station later, you will also be able to use your existing ticket to do this at no extra cost.

  • CrossCountry between Reading / Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly
  • London Northwestern Railway between Birmingham New Street and Crewe / Liverpool Lime Street
  • Transport for Wales between Birmingham International and Shrewsbury / Chester / Manchester Piccadilly / Aberstwyth, and also between Birmingham New Street and Holyhead
  • West Midlands Railway between Birmingham New Street and Shrewsbury

Transport for Wales says it expects disruption all day due to the derailment.

It posted on X: “Due to a low speed derailment at Wolverhampton: Train services running through Shrewsbury and Birmingham International will be subject to disruption.

“Disruption is expected until the end of the day.”

Rail passengers heading through Wolverhampton, Stafford and Shrewsbury have all been affected with trains unable to run in either direction.

Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, London Northwestern Railway (LNR), Transport for Wales (TfW) and WMR services have all been impacted.

There are rail replacement buses were running between Telford and Wolverhampton, with onward rail travel operating from Telford Central to Shrewsbury.
