Political campaign leaflets were found at polling stations in North Lanarkshire today in breach of strict rules. Campaign leaflets were found at voting booths in Chryston and Coatbridge today as the Holyrood election got underway.
It is understood the leaflets were for Scottish Labour, reports The National. A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson confirmed to the Record that campaign leaflets were found in the booths and were “immediately removed by polling staff”.
The local authority has since warned that any campaigning activity or materials relating to candidates, parties, or political campaigns within polling stations, places, or booths is strictly forbidden.
The Electoral Commission makes clear that “campaign material is not allowed within the perimeters of a polling station. This means there shouldn’t be any campaign posters, banners or other advertising literature present at the polling station.”

The council spokesperson said: “There must not be any campaigning activity or materials relating to candidates, parties or political campaigns within polling stations, places or booths, which are neutral and independent from the political process.
“Campaign leaflets were found within a booth at a polling station in the Coatbridge and Chryston constituency and were immediately removed by polling staff.”
