Why Vinicius Jr’s goal against Scotland was ruled out
World Cup fans eye historic Scotland breakthrough against five-time champion Brazil
During a decisive World Cup 2026 group match in Miami, Brazil‘s Vinicius Junior had what would have been his second goal against Scotland disallowed by VAR.
The 22nd-minute goal was ruled out after Vinicius Junior was deemed to have fouled Scotland defender Jack Hendry, a decision that sparked significant debate.
BBC pundits were split on the VAR call, with former referee Darren Cann and ex-Brazil international Lucas Leiva arguing it was not a foul.
Conversely, former Scotland international James McFadden and pundit Rachel Corsie supported the decision, believing contact was made before the ball was played.
Despite the disallowed goal, Vinicius Junior went on to score a valid second goal for Brazil just before half-time, leaving Scotland in a challenging position.
