Canada make World Cup history – but Switzerland defeat could have huge impact on World Cup hopes

Goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi saw Switzerland beat hosts Canada 2-1 in Vancouver to top Group B.
The win sees Switzerland become only the fourth nation – alongside Brazil, Argentina, and France – to reach the last 16 in the last four consecutive World Cups.
Their reward for finishing top will see them play one of the third-placed teams from Group E, F, G, H, I or J in Vancouver on July 3.
Despite the loss, Canada also progressed to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history, finishing as runners-up. However, Jesse Marsch’s side forfeited their home advantage by not winning the group, meaning they will play no further matches on Canadian soil.
Their next fixture is scheduled for 28 June at the Los Angeles Stadium in California, where they will face the Group A runners-up.
