Fencing was installed around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, with the administration attributing its early placement to “vandalism by leftist activists.”
The Department of the Interior stated that while fencing is typical for July 4th, it was put up sooner to prevent further damage to the historic site.
The White House claims vandals sabotaged the $16 million renovation by dumping fertilizer and cutting a 350-foot gash in the pool’s newly refinished surface.
Six people have been arrested and seven cited for the alleged damage, though one individual, former Olympian David Hearn, denies the accusations and plans to contest them.
Park workers had identified existing issues with the pool’s foam and bubbling system, and the extensive renovation is now unlikely to be finished before the July 4th celebrations.
