The United States on Monday articulated its deep concern over information that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and affiliated combatants are massing forces around El Obeid in Sudan.
Washington says the reinforcement increases the risk of violence against civilians, including attacks on infrastructure, and further escalation of the conflict in El Obeid and the Kordofan region.
The U.S. resonated the warning by the UN and the EU, saying the alarming indications that mass atrocities are imminent could further worsen Sudan’s already catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
The government asked the RSF and allied forces to halt any actions that could endanger civilians, impede humanitarian assistance, or contribute to further atrocities and suffering.
The belligerents, according to the State Department, must uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and ensure that those seeking safety can do so freely.
“This war has exacted an intolerable toll on the Sudanese people,” the statement reads. “Civilians have suffered immensely from the devastation caused by this conflict.”
The U.S, however, declared that “There is no military solution to this conflict,” urging warring parties to pursue a settlement that ends the violence and addresses the suffering of the population.
The Trump Administration insists only through peace and stability can Sudan return to independent civilian-led governance, preserve its unity, and realize the aspirations of its people.
Washington assures it is working with partners and Sudanese stakeholders to advance a humanitarian truce, secure humanitarian access, and achieve civilian transition and durable peace.
