Britain is forecast to have sufficient electricity to meet demand this winter, according to the National Energy System Operator (Neso).
Neso predicts a surplus of 5.5 gigawatts, representing an 8 per cent buffer against peak winter demand, which is an improvement on previous years.
Despite the positive outlook, Neso cautioned about potential “tight days” during cold spells, particularly in mid-to-late January 2027, when demand could be high.
Gas prices are expected to be more volatile due to the Middle East conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, leading to increased household energy bills.
The UK’s energy security is bolstered by diverse sources, including US liquefied natural gas, North Sea supplies, renewables, and increased battery storage capacity.
