James Burrows, the celebrated director whose vision shaped iconic American sitcoms including Friends and Cheers, has died at the age of 85. His passing, announced on Friday, has prompted an outpouring of tributes from stars, with many describing him as a “father figure” who profoundly influenced their careers.

David Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller in Friends, shared a poignant Instagram message reflecting on Burrows’ impact. “Jimmy Burrows brought out the best in every actor he ever worked with, and elevated every show he directed, making it funnier and more moving than anyone expected,” the 59-year-old wrote.

He continued: “His warmth, humility and generosity made us feel safe, like family… He became another father figure for me, and I’m sure others. Paternal in the best sense of the word, loving, wise, encouraging, challenging, instructive, patient, inspiring, playful—and on my best days, I’d like to think, even proud.”

Schwimmer, who posted a black-and-white image of himself with Burrows and Matt LeBlanc, expressed his gratitude.

The 58-year-old actor continued, “You sir are a true icon on so many levels. Well wishes in your next act. You will be missed. God bless.”

LeBlanc accompanied his post with a picture of himself and Burrows at Wembley Stadium. Lisa Kudrow, who portrayed Phoebe Buffay, shared a picture of herself with Burrows next to his director’s chair on her Instagram story.

In a statement shared with US outlet People, Burrows’ family confirmed his peaceful passing, surrounded by loved ones. They celebrated his “extraordinary life and enduring legacy,” highlighting that “for more than five decades, Burrows was one of the most influential and beloved directors in television history.”
