Miguel Almiron has become the first player to be shown a red card for covering their mouth when saying something to Mert Muldur during Paraguay’s match against Turkey at the World Cup. Covering your mouth became a red card offence after its approval at a special meeting of the International Football Association Board in late April, and FIFA opted to adopt the amendment at this tournament.

Paraguay were leading 1-0 when reduced to ten men after Matias Galarza put them ahead after 65 seconds. However, they now have to play the whole second-half a player down after the former Newcastle United player saw red.
