Thomas Tuchel’s decision to turn to Chalobah has sparked debate, with some questioning why he did not select another full-back such as Trent Alexander-Arnold or Lewis Hall.
Wayne Rooney was asked for his thoughts on Chalobah’s call-up while working as a pundit for the BBC during France’s match against Senegal.
Rooney branded the decision to select Chalobah as “a bit strange”, and said that he would have picked Manchester United’s Luke Shaw instead.
England now have just three recognised full-backs in their squad, with Djed Spence providing cover for Reece James and Nico O’Reilly.
