A Scottish airport suddenly closed on Sunday due to an “ongoing incident”.

Travellers were warned Inverness Airport had been forced to shut this afternoon (June 14). It is currently unknown what the incident was that caused the closure.

The airport said it would remain closed until 4pm but posted an update on social media later in the afternoon to say that it had re-opened.

The message also urged passengers to contact their airline for further details on flights.

In a message on X posted at around 1:51pm, Inverness Airport wrote: “Inverness Airport is closed until approximately 4pm due to an ongoing incident, reports the Daily Star.

“We advise passengers to contact their airline for the latest flight updates before travelling.”

The same message was also published on X by Highlands & Islands Airports, which manages Inverness Airport.

Despite the airport re-opening, disruption for passengers is likely to continue with delays.

A post on the airport’s Facebook page later said: “Inverness Airport is now open again after the earlier incident and flights are operating.

“Thank you to passengers for their patience while the incident was ongoing.”

A spokesperson for Inverness Airport has said there is no further information to share regarding the incident at this moment in time.
