Music legend Shania Twain has publicly stated she does not identify as a feminist, despite her empowering anthems often leading to her being perceived as one.
Twain explained her reluctance to embrace the term, telling The Times that “vulnerable men need just as much protection as vulnerable women”, and that she sees herself as a strong, independent person, not just “for a woman”.
She clarified that the word “feminist” was “tricky” for her due to historical negativity and confusion surrounding it, which prevented her from personally proclaiming herself as one.
However, Twain acknowledged that she aligns with the core values and morals of feminism, which the United Nations defines as the belief in equal rights and opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender.
The 60-year-old Canadian singer, known for hits like Man! I Feel Like A Woman, is currently supporting Harry Styles on his Love On Tour and recently performed in the legends slot at Glastonbury festival.
