Sweden and Tunisia begin their Group F campaigns in the early hours of Monday at Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe. The Scandinavians are appearing at a World Cup for the 13th time, while the Eagles of Carthage are bidding to reach the knockout stage for the first time on their seventh attempt.

Sweden’s route to the finals was an unusual one. Despite failing to win a match and finishing bottom of their qualifying group, they kept their hopes alive via the Nations League pathway and then took advantage in the playoffs. Viktor Gyokeres proved decisive, hitting a hat-trick against Ukraine in the semi-finals before scoring a late winner against Poland in the final.

Now led by Graham Potter, Sweden will look to maintain a strong tournament record, having progressed from the group stage in each of their last four World Cup appearances since 1990. However, warm-up results — a 3-1 loss to Norway and a 2-2 draw with Greece — again exposed defensive issues, with Blagult now conceding in 11 straight matches, even if they have also scored in each of their last six.

Tunisia, by contrast, cruised through CAF qualifying, winning nine of 10 matches and conceding no goals to finish comfortably top of their group. Their World Cup record is far less convincing, though: six group-stage exits from six appearances, with only three wins in 18 matches.

Sabri Lamouchi’s side also arrive with momentum lacking, having been knocked out by Mali at AFCON before losing 1-0 to Austria and then being thrashed 5-0 by Belgium in June. Tunisia have failed to score in three successive games, but they can draw confidence from winning the most recent meeting with Sweden, a 1-0 friendly success in 2003.

Sweden have no fresh injury worries following Emil Holm’s withdrawal, but Leeds left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson is battling a virus and is a doubt to face Tunisia. If he misses out, Daniel Svensson or Elliot Stroud could deputise, while Victor Lindelof, Anthony Elanga, Benjamin Nygren and Alexander Bernhardsson are all fit again.

Graham Potter is expected to stick with a 3-4-1-2, with Lindelof in a back three and Viktor Gyokeres partnering Alexander Isak up front.

Tunisia are also expected to have a full squad available, though Sabri Lamouchi is likely to make changes after the heavy loss to Belgium. Hannibal Mejbri and Union Berlin midfielder Rani Khedira are both in line to return, while Omar Rekik should marshal the defence in front of goalkeeper Mouhib Chamakh.
