The San Antonio Spurs suffered a historic 107-106 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, after squandering a 29-point lead, the largest ever blown in Finals history.
The Spurs, who led by 29 points in the second quarter and maintained a 27-point advantage at halftime, managed to score only 30 points in the entire second half of the game.
London-born OG Anunoby sealed the dramatic comeback victory for the Knicks with a tip-in basket with just 1.2 seconds left on the clock, bringing New York within one win of their first NBA championship since 1973.
NBA legend and analyst Charles Barkley fiercely criticized the Spurs on Inside the NBA, calling them “the dumbest basketball team in the history of civilization” for their “mismanaged, stupid basketball”, a sentiment fully supported by fellow analyst Shaquille O’Neal.
Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, admitted he could not explain the collapse, suggesting it was due to a lack of execution and the team not being “the most hungry in the second half.”
