A school in Manchester is on lockdown after three people were injured in a serious incident with police arresting a girl. It is understood the three hurt people had injuries consistent with a knife, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Images show a large emergency services presence outside the Co-op Academy on Plant Hill Road, Blackley, and according to parents, the school is currently on lockdown.

A helicopter has also been seen overhead and Greater Manchester Police cars, along with ambulances, have been pictured outside the school gates, as well as within the school grounds.

Three people have been injured at the school with the Manchester Evening News understanding they are consistent with knife wounds.

Greater Manchester Police stated: “Three people have been injured however injuries aren’t believed to be serious at this time.”

It added: “Emergency services remain on scene and we are supporting the school. There is not believed to be any wider threat to the pupils and staff in the school.”

A parent has written on social media that children are safe and have been locked in classrooms as a precaution.

“My son is in year 9. He has called me to say the children are locked in their classrooms as a precaution. So they are safe,” a woman wrote on Facebook.

Local politician Dean Luke Booth has called for people to avoid the area with police on the scene.

He wrote on Facebook. “I am aware of the highly concerning reports and the large emergency services presence at the Co-op Academy on Plant Hill Road this morning following a school lockdown.

“Greater Manchester Police have just released an official update to reassure parents and the local community:

  • Officers are currently responding to an incident at the school, and one schoolgirl has been arrested.
  • Three people have been injured, but thankfully, police have confirmed that the injuries are not believed to be serious at this time.
  • There is no wider threat to pupils and staff within the school.
  • Emergency services remain on the scene to manage the situation and support the school.

“I know exactly how terrifying it is for parents when an incident like this happens, but please try to remain calm. The police have confirmed the immediate threat has been contained and the children are safe.

“Please avoid the immediate area to allow the ambulances and police to do their jobs. I will share any further official updates as soon as we get them.”
