This brooding and complex crime thriller is essential viewing for Happy Valley fans, starring Doctor Who’s Jenna Coleman as she grapples with a sinister past.

Available on BBC iPlayer, The Jetty unfolds in a small rural town where Detective Ember Manning (Coleman) works to uncover the connections between a holiday cottage blaze, a podcast journalist examining a cold case disappearance, and an unlawful love triangle involving a man in his twenties and two underage girls.

The 2024 series is a limited mini-series featuring an impressive cast, including Amelia Bullmore, who secured best supporting actress at the Crime Thriller Awards for her performance in Scott and Bailey.

Tom Glynn-Carney (The King, Dunkirk) portrays Ember’s ex-partner Malachy – a mysterious, ethically questionable character whose intentions Ember must thoroughly examine.

Cat Jones crafted this award-winning drama as her debut limited television project. One viewer described it as tackling “important” issues surrounding women’s lives, reports Wales Online.

They wrote on IMDB: “Whenever I come to IMDB to see user reviews about a show that says important things about the lives of women, I’m always stunned to see the low ratings that show has received. Every single time.

“It’s a great production with excellent acting. The story is good. It says things about women’s lives that are not comfortable for men to acknowledge. And many women will take issue with it too, because that’s what we do to ourselves. But the things it says are things that are obviously true, and in The Jetty, they are well presented in an absorbing story.

“To the creators: well done, and sorry this series will never get the rating it deserves. Maybe if you put a superhero into it?”

One viewer labelled it a “gripping” drama that felt “unexpectedly hopeful”, adding: “I personally found this to be an exceptional series that had me hooked from start to finish.

“The acting across the board was outstanding, with Jenna and Ruby delivering especially powerful performances as mother and daughter. I also enjoyed the added narration done by Weruche Opia. Without spoilers I will say that multiple storylines really resonated with my own personal experiences and I appreciated the topics that were explored and how they were written.

“In just a few short episodes which explore both past and present storylines, the show offers an interesting exploration of its characters, their relationships, and most importantly their flaws. The storytelling was both impactful and thought provoking which allowed me to deeply connect with the characters in a remarkably short time.

“The series is also able to masterfully balances tension, intrigue, and comedy, all while delivering a compelling narrative about women navigating the complexities of the world and the inner rage we often suppress but still delving into personal flaws and how not everything is as simple as wrong and right.”
