A 100-metre cordon was put in place after a “bomb-shaped object” was found near a quarry in Plymouth.
Devon and Cornwall Police said it was called at around 12.30pm on Monday to a report that an “unknown device” had been discovered by contractors at Colesdown Hill.
A spokesperson for the Royal Navy said an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team assessed the object and confirmed it was not a bomb. The cordon was lifted in the afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said: “We can confirm that a Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from DTXG B Sqn, responded to an address in Plymstock, Plymouth following a request from Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.
“The item was identified as a non-ammunition item and removed from the scene for subsequent destruction.”

Devon and Cornwall Police said the 100-metre cordon has been lifted.
A force spokesperson said: “Police were notified at around 12.30pm today (June 8) to a report of an unknown device being located by contractors at Colesdown Hill in Plymstock.
“Officers informed the EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] who attended and confirmed the device was not an ordnance.
“As a precaution, a 100-metre cordon was put in place which has since been removed.”

Plymouth was one of the most heavily bombed British cities during World War Two.
More than 50 bombing raids were carried out on the city between 1941 and 1944, killing about 1,178 civilians.
Official records estimate that at least 2,820 bombs were dropped on Plymouth, with about 10 per cent failing to detonate, leaving unexploded ordnance scattered across the area.

GT Motorcycles 2012 Limited said on Facebook: “Due to unforeseen circumstances our premises will be closed until further notice.
“The potential WW2 bomb has been found across the road by the quarry and bomb squad are currently on their way to access the situation. We appreciate your understanding and sorry for any inconvenience caused!”
Schools in the area have reportedly sent letters to parents informing them that a suspected unexploded WW2 bomb has been discovered, Plymouth Live reports.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix says the A379 Elburton Road has been closed in both directions as a result of the incident.
There are also reports of queueing traffic from Southernway to Stentaway Road.
