Liverpool icon Divock Origi has announced his retirement and claims his “purpose in the game as a player is fulfilled”.

The Belgian scored for the Reds in their Champions League final success of 2019 – which was just one of several memorable goals during his time with the Merseysiders. Origi also scored in the iconic semi-final comeback over Barcelona at Anfield just weeks earlier.

He’s now called time on his career at the age of 31, leaving the game with his name firmly etched into Liverpool folklore, particularly under Jurgen Klopp. Origi enjoyed a special bond with the German, who once wildly celebrated a goal he scored to win the Merseyside derby in the last minute.

The striker was signed as an unknown quantity from Lille in 2014 and went on to scored 41 times in 175 appearances, but only 68 of those were starts as he became known for his impact off the bench.

Origi announced his retirement on social media and said: “My purpose in the game as a player is fulfilled. I lived out my childhood dreams to play on the biggest stages and win the biggest trophies. I am grateful to God for all of it.

“To my fans across the world who helped me shine: every iconic moment, every goal, every piece of history we made together will forever be ours. To every club, and all the coaches and teammates who stood beside me, thank you. You shaped me in ways that go far beyond the pitch.

“Representing Belgium, my nation, while carrying Kenya, my roots, was a joy. And to my family and those closest to me… without you, I am not who I am today. I am forever grateful. The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling. More of the journey to come…”

After leaving Liverpool, where he also won the Premier League, Origi joined AC Milan on a free transfer, but would later return to England for a season-long loan with Nottingham Forest in 2024. He would win 32 caps for his country, scoring three times for Belgium, but will forever be remembered for his exploits with Liverpool.

Klopp described Origi as a “Liverpool legend” before he played his final match at Anfield, stating: “We can only do that with the few we know it definitely.

“I think that is only Div. So, yes, I expect Div to get a special reception, or farewell, or whatever. He is, and will be for me, forever a Liverpool legend [and] one of the most important players I ever had.”
