Diver films ‘special’ encounter with Great White shark in Mediterranean Sea
Volunteer divers encountered a four-metre-long Great White Shark in the Strait of Sicily while clearing abandoned fishing nets from a shipwreck.
This rare sighting is believed to be the first time the predator has been filmed underwater in the Mediterranean sea.
The divers, from Healthy Seas Foundation, Ghost Diving, and SDSS, described the shark as curious and non-aggressive during the encounter.
The incident highlights the significant problem of ‘ghost nets’, with an estimated 640,000 nets lost or discarded globally each year, which trap and kill marine life.
Healthy Seas is calling on governments and the fishing industry to reduce the abandonment of fishing nets to protect marine ecosystems.
