Israel has carried out revenge missile strikes on Iranian military targets despite a warning from US President Donald Trump to show restraint.

Israel’s attack early on Monday, June 8, hit multiple targets, according to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) with a petrochemical plant reportedly one site targeted. The strikes come hours after Iran launched barrages at the northern part of the country with the IDF saying it intercepted all the missiles.

The IDF said in a post on X on Monday: “The Air Force, guided by Military Intelligence, struck military targets of the Iranian terror regime in western and central Iran a short while ago. Further details to follow.”

The trading of strikes between Israel and Iran marks the worst escalation in the Middle East conflict since the US-Iran truce was agreed in April.

Iran’s missiles have been aimed at northern and central Israel.

Sources told the Daily Mirror around 20 were fired – at least one from the Iranian region of Karaj. Other missiles were fired from Khuzestan Province, in Iran.

Sirens blared throughout Israel as additional launches were fired by Iran, and Tel Aviv has warned Washington it will launch revenge strikes, according to sources.

On Sunday night, Israeli officials within the Ministry of Health were preparing emergency measures, including moving hospitals to underground bunkers.

It is believed most, if not all, of Iran’s missiles have been intercepted by 8.40pm BST, and Israel may already have launched a retaliation.

Sources said Israel’s Ramat David Air Base may have come under fire.

Major explosions were reportedly heard in Tabriz, in eastern Iran, and more waves of missiles were heading for Israel by late evening and were mostly intercepted.

Our Defence Editor Chris Hughes reports.

The Middle East’s ceasefires are on a knife-edge, set to explode into a new round of war after Tehran unleashed waves of missiles on Israel.

Medium-range ballistic weapons have been fired at Israel in two waves, fired, it is believed mostly from eastern Iran – in revenge for strikes on Lebanon.

At least three of the missiles are feared to have hit northern Israel, according to sources.

Both the Iran ceasefire and the fragile cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which has been beset by violence, may now be in tatters.

It is the first time Iran has directly attacked Israel with missiles since April.

Washington has been desperately trying to play down the escalation, and US President Donald Trump is expected to order President Benjamin Netanyahu not to retaliate.

He has insisted peace talks are still underway – despite consistent denials they are happening from Iran.

He did not directly mention the missile salvos that Israel said it was intercepting.
