Officers investigating reports of a suspicious item in a front garden in Fallowfield have discovered a second suspicious item inside a home just feet away.
The second item was found outside a property on Rostherne Avenue at around 2.45pm on Sunday, Greater Manchester Police said. No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
It comes after police were called to a suspicious item on Abram Close – which links to Rostherne Avenue – shortly after 6pm on Saturday. A bomb disposal unit assessed the item and residents in around 20 nearby properties were told to evacuate as a precaution. The cordon was later lifted and residents were allowed to return at night.
The force confirmed on Sunday afternoon that a cordon has been put back in place and several homes in the area have been evacuated. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams have returned to the area, with specialist explosives robots deployed at the scene.
Detective Chief Inspector Peter Morley said: “We thank everyone for their patience so far whilst we deal with this incident as our investigation into the full circumstances continues.
“Incidents such as these are likely to cause alarm in the local community, but please be reassured that there is no wider threat. A number of road closures are in place, please avoid the area and find alternative routes.
“Officers will be on hand to ensure the safety of people in the nearby area – please speak to them if you have any concerns. As our work continues, it is vital that anyone who has any information – no matter how small – should report it to us and allow us to investigate.”
