Christian Brueckner, the most high-profile suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, was sentenced to six weeks in prison by Oldenburg District Court in December 2024 for verbally abusing a prison guard in October 2023, calling him a “son of a b****”.
The activation of Brueckner’s six-week prison sentence has been delayed until autumn after his lawyer called in sick, meaning he will remain free for now, prompting concerns he might flee the country.
In a separate incident in May 2025, Brueckner received a one-month suspended prison sentence from Lehrte District Court for insulting a senior prison officer by calling her a “joke” during a meeting.
Brueckner served a seven-year sentence for the 2005 rape of an American woman in Portugal, and he has consistently denied any involvement in the Madeleine McCann case, for which he has never been charged.
UK police are reportedly intensifying efforts to bring Brueckner to trial in the UK for Madeleine McCann’s suspected abduction and murder, aiming for charges before the 20th anniversary next year, despite potential extradition challenges due to German constitutional law.
