Rare JMW Turner watercolour of Swiss landscape heads to auction
‘Evocative’ painting by JMW Turner expected to fetch up to £600,000 at auction (PA)
A “luminous” watercolour painting by JMW Turner, titled The Lauerzersee With The Ruins Of Schwanau And The Mythen, is set to be auctioned by Christie’s with an estimated value of £400,000 to £600,000.
The artwork, depicting a Swiss landscape, is one of the highly celebrated and prized watercolours from Turner’s final tours of Switzerland before his death in 1851.
This particular watercolour sketch is considered a rare example still held in private hands, as many of Turner’s larger commissioned views are now housed in museums, and it possesses a well-documented provenance.
The painting will headline Christie’s “Lines Of Vision: Celebrating 20 Years of Stephen Ongpin Fine Art” sale, which forms part of its Classic Week next month.
The auction will feature approximately 100 drawings and works on paper spanning 500 years, including pieces by artists such as Tiepolo, Picasso, and Klee, celebrating Stephen Ongpin’s two decades as a specialist in the field.
