The Met Office has cautioned that UK weather is set to turn increasingly unsettled this weekend, with heavy rainfall once again battering parts of the country. Showers are expected to pass through relatively swiftly for most regions, though rain could become “more persistent in places”.

A number of heavier downpours are also anticipated, with the possibility of thunder in some areas.

The forecast also warned that the incoming conditions will “bring a spell of rain and strengthening winds moving northeastwards across the country,” heavier rainfall is expected to strike large swathes of the southwest. “Rain may be heavy at times, particularly in the southwest at first, before becoming more patchy as it moves through.

Winds will also strengthen, especially along coasts and in the west, with some locally gusty conditions possible,” the forecast further stated.

Met Office chief meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: “Over the next few days, we’ll continue to see a fairly changeable picture, with a mix of sunshine and showers for many.

“Into the weekend, a more organised area of rain and stronger winds will move across the UK, although this system is likely to weaken as it does so.

“While some heavier rain and gusty conditions are possible at times, the overall picture remains one of changeable weather, with further spells of rain or showers interspersed with some drier and brighter periods.”

The Met Office has also warned that showers or prolonged spells of rain are expected to persist into Sunday and the early part of next week, with some brighter, drier breaks in between.
