Tributes flow for acclaimed filmmaker after death at 56

Marjane Satrapi, the acclaimed Iranian-French cartoonist and filmmaker best known for her work Persepolis, has died at the age of 56.
French media reported that Satrapi “died of sadness” just over a year after the passing of her husband, Swedish film producer Mattias Ripa.
Her autobiographical comic book and film Persepolis chronicled her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution, earning significant international awards and an Oscar nomination.
Satrapi was a vocal advocate for human rights, particularly for Iranian women, co-ordinating the book Femme, vie, liberté (Woman, Life, Freedom) and declining France’s Legion of Honour over perceived insufficient support for Iranian democracy.
French President Emmanuel Macron is among those paying tribute, describing Satrapi as “a remarkable artist who transformed an Iranian childhood into a universal fable”.
