Reinventing an iconic British character in a fashion never seen before, this gripping mystery series should be firmly placed at the top of the binge-watch list for devoted Sherlock enthusiasts.
The Emmy Award-winning series Sherlock set an incredibly high benchmark for stories surrounding the legendary British detective, and ever since it concluded in 2017, devoted fans have been desperately seeking their next fix.
Their search is finally over, as the 2026 TV series Young Sherlock presents the celebrated detective in an entirely fresh perspective. This time, viewers are granted a fascinating glimpse into his formative years as a student, commencing at the prestigious Oxford University in England.
The story begins with a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes, long before his reputation as the master detective he eventually becomes, portrayed instead as a sharp yet undisciplined university student. His character comes across as raw and unrestrained until a shocking murder occurs at Oxford, placing his very freedom in jeopardy.

This pivotal moment sees him embrace his detective instincts for the very first time, as he takes it upon himself to unravel the murder mystery, ultimately uncovering a far-reaching global conspiracy.
Young Sherlock was conceived by Matthew Parkhill and developed by Peter Harness and Guy Ritchie, who subsequently directed two episodes of the programme. The undeniable star of the show, however, is Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who portrays the rebellious young Sherlock across all eight episodes.
Many fans have commended his abilities and the performances from the entire ensemble. One review on Rotten Tomatoes says: “Really great acting, cinematography, set/costume design, etc. and use of modern music throughout. It’s a fun, engaging series doing justice to an iconic set of characters. Good job.”
Another said: “I thought this was going to be an episodic Sherlock that I wouldn’t have to binge. I was very wrong. This show is made to binge on a weekend. Great writing and atmosphere. Sherlock was more wimpy than I liked, but I still had a lot of fun with this show.”

The ensemble also includes Dónal Finn portraying James Moriarty, Sherlock’s friend, Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an and Joseph Fiennes as Silas Holmes, Sherlock’s father. Particularly noteworthy is Colin Firth’s unexpected cameo as a staff member working for Mycroft, one of Sherlock’s brothers.
One review notes: “So many fun twists and turns. Great cast and moves fast. Have I ever cared about Sherlock Holmes? No. Would I watch five more seasons of this? 100%.”
