A Lanarkshire veteran has made an emotional return to University Hospital Wishaw to personally thank the staff who helped save his life during a lengthy and challenging hospital stay.
Wullie Fisher, a veteran and member of Veterans Community Lanarkshire based in Craigneuk, was admitted to Ward 6 at the hospital in September 2025 suffering from a rare medical condition.
At times his condition was critical, and there were periods when his future remained uncertain.
Throughout his time in hospital, Wullie was supported around the clock by the dedicated nursing and medical staff on Ward 6.
One nurse in particular, Joanne Thomson, provided exceptional care, compassion and reassurance during some of his darkest moments.
There were occasions when Wullie’s illness took him to a very difficult place emotionally, but the kindness, professionalism and encouragement shown by Joanne and the entire Ward 6 team helped him remain positive throughout his recovery journey.
Wullie, who lives in Wishaw, was also supported every step of the way by his partner, Liz Orr, who remained faithfully by his side day and night throughout his hospital stay.
Following months of treatment and rehabilitation, Wullie has recently been discharged from hospital and is continuing his recovery at home with ongoing support.
He said: “I can never thank the staff enough for what they did for me. The care, support and kindness I received helped me through the toughest period of my life.
“It was important for me to come back and show them the progress I have made and to let them know how much their efforts meant to me.
“I would also like to thank Veterans Community Lanarkshire, DMWS, and especially my partner Liz, who stood by me every day throughout my recovery.”
This week Wullie returned to the hospital to meet the staff who cared for him and to show them just how far he has come.
The visit was an opportunity for him to personally thank those who played such an important role in his recovery and to demonstrate the remarkable progress he has made since leaving hospital.
During the visit, Wullie was also joined by Lynne Davidson from DMWS (Defence Medical Welfare Service), whose support has been invaluable throughout his recovery journey.
Wullie would like to express a massive thank you to all the staff, particularly the team in Ward 6, for their outstanding care, dedication and support.
