A haunting true crime documentary has been branded ‘better than Netflix’s The Crash’, and it can be streamed online now.

Netflix subscribers have been gripped by documentary film The Crash, which dives into the chilling case of Mackenzie Shirilla. The chart topping watch broke records worldwide, landing itself in top spot.

In just one week, from May 18 to May 24, it brought in a staggering 27.6 million views, which was up from the week before when it saw 11.7million views. According to Netflix’s Tudum, The Crash reached number 1 in Movies in 27 countries having so far spent two weeks in the Top 10.

But now, viewers are looking for their next binge watch, and there is one that needs to be on everyone’s radar.

Taking to Reddit recently, one user asked for true crime recommendations “that have the same feel as The Crash” with many coming up with the same documentary – American Murder: The Family Next Door.

American Murder: The Family Next Door chronicles the murder of Shanann Watts and her two young children, using archival footage such as police body cam, text messages and home videos.

A Netflix synopsis reads: “Using raw, firsthand footage, this documentary examines the disappearance of Shanann Watts and her children, and the terrible events that followed.”

Recommending the true crime doc on Reddit, amongst others, one user replied: “All three use body cam footage from the police on the scene, follow the investigation step by step, and there’s nothing graphic in them. They have a similar feel as The Crash, imo.”

However, one said it was better than The Crash, stating: “American Murder: The Family Next Door was definitely GOAT. Tops ‘The Crash’. So much text message conversations and analysis of social media posts.”

A third replied: “I listen/watch alot of true crime but American murder almost finished me off, I am haunted by that years on from watching it.”

Having first been released in 2020, the documentary still leaves viewers speechless. With a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, one reviewer said: “This documentary truly left me speechless. It perfectly captures how a single whim can destroy everything and how a carefully planned lie can spiral completely out of control.”

They added: “Out of all the mystery and true crime documentaries I’ve seen — including those about serial killers — this one stands out the most.

“It’s shocking, unpredictable, and filled with moments that make you question how far people are willing to go to protect a secret. By the end, I was left with my mouth wide open and more questions than answers.”
