President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday led principal officers of the Senate on a traditional Eid-el-Kabir homage to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, reaffirming the National Assembly’s support for the administration’s economic and security reforms.

Speaking after the meeting, Akpabio said the visit was an opportunity to celebrate the Sallah festivities with the President, pray for peace and stability in the country, and commend ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s economy.

He praised key policies introduced by the Tinubu administration, including the removal of fuel subsidy, exchange rate harmonisation, and tax reforms, describing them as difficult but necessary decisions aimed at restoring fiscal discipline and stimulating economic growth.

According to the Senate President, the administration inherited significant economic challenges, including multiple foreign exchange windows and a growing debt burden, but has made progress in stabilising the economy.

“We came to felicitate with Mr President on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir and to commend the efforts being made to address the economic challenges facing the nation,” Akpabio said.

On security, he acknowledged improvements in the fight against insurgency but noted that attacks on soft targets remain a concern requiring sustained attention.

Akpabio disclosed that the National Assembly is considering measures to strengthen policing in the country, including increased support for the Police Trust Fund and ongoing discussions on the establishment of a regulated state police system.

He assured Nigerians that the legislature would continue to work closely with the executive arm of government to improve security, expand infrastructure, boost agricultural productivity, and drive economic development.

The visit comes amid continued implementation of economic reforms by the Tinubu administration, which government officials say are designed to place the country on a path of sustainable growth despite current economic challenges faced by many Nigerians.
