Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and says the game will launch on October 23rd, 2026. Modern Warfare 4, which is developed by Infinity Ward, will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X / S, PC — and it will also be the first Call of Duty title to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 following a 10-year deal Microsoft reached with Nintendo as it worked to complete the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
Also notable: Modern Warfare 4 won’t be available on PS4 or Xbox One. Those last-gen platforms have gotten Call of Duty releases since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts, but Activision is finally moving on.
Here’s the setup for the game, according to Activision:
War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilize the world in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. A young squad of South Korean soldiers fight to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him. As Price’s off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone’s control.
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 is “built natively for current-generation consoles and PC,” which will enable “greater scale, density, responsiveness, and consistency across every mode.” For PC players, Activision is promising that the game is built “with a renewed focus,” including features like “PC-specific performance optimizations,” “multiple” options for upscaling and frame generation, and “extended graphics options.”
Call of Duty: Warzone is also being wound down on PS4 and Xbox One. Starting June 4th, new downloads of the game on PS4 and Xbox One won’t be allowed anymore, and on June 25th, the in-game store will be removed on those platforms. Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will stop being playable starting with Season 1 for Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone, which kicks off “shortly after” the October 23rd launch.
