At least 1 dead, 9 missing after chemical explosion in Longview
A chemical explosion occurred at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging paper mill in Longview, Washington, on Tuesday around 7:15 a.m. local time.
The incident was caused by the rupture of a tank containing “white liquor,” a chemical used in paper production, which was approximately 60 percent full of its 80,000-gallon capacity.
Officials have confirmed one person has died, and nine employees are currently missing following the incident.
Ten individuals, including eight employees and one firefighter, were hospitalized with various injuries, some involving chemical burns.
Recovery efforts at the site are paused until Wednesday due to the ruptured tank remaining unstable and creating hazardous conditions for emergency personnel.
