Texas voters to decide Cornyn-Paxton Senate fight after Trump steps in
Ken Paxton, the ultra-MAGA attorney general of Texas, won the Republican primary runoff for U.S. Senate, defeating four-term incumbent John Cornyn.
Paxton secured the victory despite concerns from some Republicans about his electability and a late endorsement from President Donald Trump.
Trump criticized Cornyn for not being supportive “when times were tough,” referencing Cornyn’s vote to certify the 2020 presidential election.
Cornyn also faced conservative criticism for his role in negotiating a bipartisan gun control bill after the Uvalde school shooting.
Paxton, who was impeached by the state House on corruption charges but acquitted by the state Senate, will now face Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in the midterm elections.
