“Jesus Christ!” a bamboozled binman bleats as James Bond sneaks towards him using an industrial wheelie bin and then a bin lorry for cover from a firing squad on the streets of Kensington.

Bond immediately quips, “Not quite,” before asking the binman where the keys to his truck are. “They’re in the ignition,” he says, before running away as fast as he can, yelling: “It slips in second!”

As Bond makes his getaway in the bin lorry, smashing through anything that gets in his way as he escapes (which, yes, you get to play), he quietly says: “It does slip in second.”

This might be quite a small example in the grand scheme of this fantastic adventure but it’s a case of the superb writing that threads throughout 007 First Light and never lets up, not just in cutscenes and main interactions as you’d expect but even down to NPCs that play the most fleeting role.

Add in some jaw dropping visuals, globetrotting settings including Malta, Vietnam and the Antarctic, strong and varied gameplay plus a superb supporting cast and this might be the best James Bond game ever made.
