Need to know
- Current league standings: Tottenham sit in 17th place with 38 points, while West Ham are currently trapped in the relegation zone in 18th place with 36 points. This sets up a nerve-wracking, straight two-way battle between the historic London clubs for top-flight survival on the final day of the season.
- What Tottenham need: Spurs control their own destiny as they head into their final game against Everton at home. A win will mathematically guarantee their survival, pushing them to 41 points and out of reach of the Hammers. Given Tottenham’s superior goal difference, a draw would also be enough to keep them up barring an almost impossible 12-goal swing in West Ham’s favour.
- What West Ham need: The Hammers must secure a victory in their final game against Leeds United to have any legitimate hope of staying up, also at home. A draw or a loss will automatically condemn them to Championship football, regardless of how Spurs perform in their respective fixture.
- The goal difference factor: Spurs currently hold a commanding 12-goal advantage in goal difference (-10 compared to West Ham’s -22). Because of this massive gap, West Ham essentially need to pass Spurs in total points, as a tie at 39 points would almost certainly keep Spurs up.
- If Everton victory win: If Everton manage to defeat Tottenham on the final day, Spurs will remain dangerously stuck on 38 points. This specific scenario opens the door perfectly for West Ham, as a victory over Leeds would leapfrog them to 39 points and send Tottenham down instead.
- The scenario where West Ham draw: If West Ham can only manage a draw against Leeds, they will finish the season with exactly 37 points. In this case, Tottenham will survive even if they suffer a heavy defeat to Everton, as Spurs already have 38 points safely in the bank.
- If both teams lose: Should both clubs crumble under the immense pressure and lose their respective final matches, the standings will remain exactly as they are right now. Tottenham will stay up with 38 points, and West Ham will be officially relegated with 36 points alongside Burnley and Wolves.
