A large section of the M25 in Surrey was brought to a standstill after a broken down vehicle forced two lanes to close.

Lanes 1 and 2 clockwise were closed between junctions 5 and 6. National Highways said drivers were facing huge delays on approach, coupled with eight miles of traffic, as a result.

“There are delays in excess of 70 minutes on the approach with 8 miles of congestion,” it warned.

Junctions 5 and 6 of the M25 form a 5-mile section of the motorway in Surrey and Kent, linking the A21/M26 interchange to the A22 at Godstone.

It is a heavily used route prone to congestion.

All lanes have reopened between J5-J6 on the M25, but there are still delays in excess of 70 minutes on the approach with 8 miles of congestion, National Highways says.
