A major A-road in Cambridgeshire has been shut in both directions after a three-vehicle crash.

Two cars and a lorry crashed on the A47 in Wisbech shortly after 7am. Police have warned motorists that the road is expected to remain closed between Wisbech and Guyhirn “for most of the day”. Police, the fire service and paramedics are at the scene, Cambridgeshire Live reports.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area and find an alternative route.

National Highways has warned motorists to “expect delays”.

It also said that the diversion route put in place is around 50 miles long and will add a substantial amount to journeys for road users intending to use the closed section of the A47.

Road users travelling eastbound are advised to follow the Hollow Diamond on diversion road signs:

  • At Guyhirn roundabout take the second exit and continue on the A141 to Chatteris
  • At the roundabout with the A142 take the first exit onto the A142 for Ely
  • Continue on the A142 through Mepal to the A10 roundabout at Ely
  • Take the first exit onto the A10 to King’s Lynn
  • Continue on the A10 through Littleport, Downham Market, Stow Bardolph, South Runcton, Setchey, Setch and West Winch and rejoin the A47 at Hardwick Roundabout

Road users travelling westbound are advised to follow the Hollow Diamond on diversion road signs:

  • At the roundabout with the A1101 take the first exit and follow the A1101 to Outwell
  • At Outwell continue onto the A1122 through Nordelph and Salters Lode to the A10 roundabout at Downham Market
  • At the roundabout take the second exit onto the A10 south to Ely
  • Continue on the A10 through Littleport to the Ely and take the A142 to Chatteris
  • At the roundabout with the A141 in Chatteris, take the fourth exit and continue on the A141 to re-join the A47 at Guyhirn

Cambridgeshire Police is appealing for more information relating to the collision on the A47 this morning.

A spokesperson said: “We were called at 7.09am today (May 21) with reports of a three-vehicle crash involving two cars and a lorry on the A47 at South Brink.

“Officers, firefighters and paramedics are at the scene and the road is currently closed between Wisbech and Guyhirn Rings, with motorists urged to avoid the area. The road is expected to be closed for most of the day.

“Anyone with any information about the collision is urged to report this to police online quoting incident 72 of today. Call 101 if you do not have internet access.”

National Highways has said the A47 in Cambridgeshire is closed in both directions between the A141 (Guyhirn) and the A1101 (Wisbech) following a serious collision, which took place shortly before 7.30am today.

“Cambridgeshire emergency services responded to the incident and are in attendance. National Highways service providers are in attendance assisting with traffic management,” National Highways wrote on its website.
