Blantyre residents were alarmed when a stranger turned up on their doorsteps and acted oddly.

Gregg Buchanan, 50, was placed under supervision for 18 months at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner at two addresses in Glasgow Road and one house in Calder Street.

One of the victims was a woman aged 75 at the time.

The offences happened in October 2021 but the case was delayed repeatedly as Buchanan, of Winton Crescent, Blantyre, failed to attend court.

Defence agent Jackson Bateman said his client suffers poor health and was in hospital on five occasions when the case called.

The solicitor added: “He has been drinking to excess and struggles with his mental health. He has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“He knows he must take on board the help that is offered to him.”

Buchanan also admitted breaching community payback and electronic tagging orders imposed in other cases.

He appeared in court from custody but Mr Bateman appealed for a “robust” community payback order to be imposed rather than a jail sentence.

Sheriff Colin Dunipace ordered Buchanan to do 180 hours of unpaid work.

He also faces a five-month electronic tagging order, meaning he’s confined to his home between 7pm and 7am each day.
