John Swinney will be sworn in again as First Minister later today before he appoints members of his cabinet.

The SNP leader was elected as First Minister for the second time on Tuesday after his party won 58 seats at this month’s election.

He told MSPs he was “determined to get on with the job” in Holyrood as he shook the hands of fellow party leaders following a series of votes, despite no other candidate looking likely to win the backing of a majority of MSPs.

Former deputy first minister Kate Forbes and finance secretary Shona Robison are among the gaps Mr Swinney will need to fill in his cabinet after they retired at the recent election.

Angus Robertson, the former culture secretary, will also have to be replaced after losing his seat.

Firefighters remain at the scene of a blaze at a waste facility that started more than a week ago, with operations expected to continue for some time.

Crews have been at the scene at the landfill site near Ladybank in Fife since the alarm was raised at about 1.35pm on May 12.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said it remains a “complex and protracted incident” due to the “deep-seated nature” of the fire and the volume of material involved.

SFRS said that operations at the site are expected to continue for some time.

At the height of the incident, 12 appliances and specialist resources were dealing with the blaze.

Three fire engines were still at the scene as of 6.30am on Wednesday.
