Medic with hantavirus symptoms in UK hospital as nine virus contacts to arrive
A medic from Ascension Island, exhibiting hantavirus symptoms, is currently receiving specialist care at a London hospital.
Nine British individuals from St Helena and Ascension Island, potentially exposed to hantavirus but asymptomatic, are expected to arrive in the UK on Sunday evening.
These individuals will complete their self-isolation at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral, supported by the NHS’s High Consequence Infectious Diseases network.
The repatriations are linked to a hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has resulted in 11 reported cases and three fatalities.
The UK Health Security Agency has deployed a Public Health Rapid Support Team to the affected overseas territories to assist with testing and infection control.
