If you’re aged 60 or over and regularly travel by train, a senior railcard can cut the cost of your journeys by a third. The railcard costs £35 for one year or £80 for three years, and it can be used on most standard and first-class tickets across Great Britain.

You can apply for a senior railcard if you’re 60 or over.
You don’t have to wait until your 60th birthday to buy one, either. When purchasing online, you can buy your senior railcard up to two weeks before you turn 60.
You’ll need to provide any of the following proof of age when applying:
- UK driving licence, excluding Northern Ireland
- Passport
- EEA national identity card
If you’re applying online, you’ll also need a passport-style photograph for your digital railcard.

There are several ways to buy a senior railcard.
Buy a senior railcard online
The easiest option is to buy your senior railcard online. You can purchase it directly through the official Railcard website, providing your proof of age and passport-style photograph when required.
You can also buy a senior railcard through participating third-party retailers such as TrainPal and Trainline. If there’s a discount available, it can be worth comparing the price before purchasing a railcard.
Buy a senior railcard at a station
If you prefer to purchase things in person, you can buy a physical senior railcard at a staffed train station.
You’ll need to download and complete a railcard application form and take it, along with your proof of age, to a ticket office. Your railcard should be available to use straight away when purchased at a station.
Digital or physical senior railcard
You can choose between a digital or physical railcard when buying online.
A digital railcard can be added to the railcard app on your phone, while a physical railcard is delivered by post. Standard delivery can take up to 10 days, so a digital version may be the better option if you want to start using your discount quickly.

A senior railcard gives you one-third off most train tickets across England, Scotland and Wales.
It can be used on a wide range of standard and first-class fares, including:
- Anytime tickets
- Off-peak tickets
- Super-off-peak tickets
- Advance tickets
The official railcard website says senior railcard holders saved an average of £114 a year, based on combined railcard holder data from April 2025 to March 2026, excluding the cost of the railcard.
That means the railcard can pay for itself relatively quickly if you make regular train journeys.
For example, a £60 eligible train ticket could be reduced to £40 with the one-third discount, saving £20 on a single journey. Your actual saving will depend on the fares you buy and how often you travel.
A senior railcard can be used for most train journeys across Great Britain, but there are some restrictions.
One important exception applies to journeys between two stations in the network railcard area (London and South East) during the morning peak hours. The exact restriction can vary by location, so it’s worth checking the rules for your journey before booking. The restriction does not apply on public holidays.
There are also some tickets and services that aren’t eligible for the discount, including Eurostar tickets, season tickets and most London Underground and DLR tickets.
