MPs accuse Starmer of redacting Mandelson files ‘far too broadly’

Starmer: ‘I should not have appointed Mandelson’
  • MPs probing files detailing the appointment of Peter Mandelson as US ambassador have accused Sir Keir Starmer of “withholding” documents from their inquiry.
  • The Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) has accused the government of applying redactions “far too broadly” to files related to Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador.
  • The ISC stated that certain documents, including a vetting file, are being withheld from their inquiry, which they believe contravenes the terms of the humble address.
  • The committee raised “grave concerns” about the extensive use of unofficial systems, such as WhatsApp, for conducting government business and formulating policy.
  • Concerns were also expressed regarding the use of “lower-level government IT systems” instead of more secure ones, which the ISC warned puts the UK’s national security at risk.
