The United Kingdom is increasing its number of prison places to 14,000—from over 3,200 built under the Labour government—as the authorities implement stringent actions against crime.
The completion of the penitentiary extension is expected by 2031 and marks the largest prison build expansion since the era of Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901.
The government’s move is in line with the Sentencing Act 2026, which reviewed sentencing, release arrangements, and offender management primarily in England and Wales.
London says the Act will restore order to the prison system, ensure there are cells available for lawbreakers, and end emergency release measures as witnessed in 2024.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s office on Sunday confirmed that dangerous criminals will be blocked from upcoming changes to prison sentences.
Offenders to stay behind bars for longer include convicts of child sex and grooming crimes, the death of a child, death by dangerous driving, and all forms of manslaughter.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham declared his administration will introduce “the toughest ever supervision measures for offenders”, meaning their sentence will not end when they leave prison.
Such ex-convicts will face tagging and monitoring through GPS, and must not violate the “restriction zones” to be mapped out to stop them from getting anywhere near their victims.
Justice Secretary Alex Norris said he and the PM examined the reforms and concluded that people responsible for taking a life, or for horrible crimes against kids, should remain locked up.
“This is a government not shying away from the tough decisions needed to build a justice system that is firm, fair and protects the public,” the top official added.
