Man rescued after jumping from Plateau bridge

A middle-aged man was on Friday rescued after he reportedly jumped into the water from the British American Bridge in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident, which occurred around 1pm, attracted the attention of commuters and residents in the area, who quickly intervened to rescue the man.
Eyewitnesses who confirmed the incident to The PUNCH in Jos on Friday expressed shock over the man’s action.
An eyewitness, Mr Dalyop Gyang, who said he was passing through the area at the time, described how the incident unfolded.
“Several persons raised the alarm and he was eventually rescued,” Gyang said.
According to him, the man “walked towards the bridge at around 1pm on Friday afternoon before jumping into the water.”
Gyang said the rescue was a collective effort by people in the vicinity.
“The rescue operation was carried out quickly by people around the bridge, who worked together to get the man out of the water,” he added.
He further stated that the man appeared to have been injured in the process and required urgent medical attention.
Our correspondent reports that the man was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical attention.
Another eyewitness, Mercy John, also disclosed that security personnel were later seen at the scene.
She added that security operatives visited the area following the incident.
“Some policemen came to the area but I don’t know what they were about to do.”
Our correspondent reports that the circumstances that led to the man’s action were not immediately known as of the time of filing this report.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, was not immediately available for comment.
However, sources at the command’s headquarters in Jos said an investigation had commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
