The initial decision to exclude the three-time Grand Slam winner, who is retiring at the end of the season, faced widespread criticism across tennis circles.
Ranked world number 127, Wawrinka confirmed he is excited to compete in front of the New York fans one last time at Flushing Meadows.
The Swiss star, who won the last of his three majors in New York in 2016, intends to retire at his home tournament in Basel this October.
