New cruise ship rules after wildlife concerns in Greenland’s fjords
- The Greenlandic government, Naalakkersuisut, has urged cruise ship operators and captains to avoid or limit sailings within fjord areas to reduce environmental pressure, excess noise, and disturbance to native wildlife and local coastal settlements.
- In accordance with its Tourism Act, Greenland is developing formal zoning restrictions in collaboration with local communities, businesses, and stakeholders to clearly delineate areas open to cruise vessels from those subject to strict limitations.
- While overall tourism in Greenland grew by eight per cent in 2025 to almost 180,000 visitors, cruise passenger numbers experienced a minor decline of 1.4 per cent to 93,897, down from 95,185 in 2024.
- The United States remains Greenland’s largest market for cruise tourism, accounting for more than half of all cruise passengers in 2025, with tourists from Germany and the United Kingdom forming the next largest groups.
- Although Greenlandic authorities recognise the vital revenue, business development, and local employment supported by cruise tourism, they stressed that commercial interests must be balanced with the sustainable protection of natural and cultural values.
